Ann Fam Med Levri et al. 3: 457

The Article in Brief

Metformin as Treatment for Overweight and Obese Adults: A Systematic Review

By Kara M. Levri, MD, MPH, and colleagues
Background: Metformin is a drug used to treat diabetes in people who are overweight or obese. It is also commonly used to treat women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition which causes infertility. This study looked at existing evidence to determine if metformin is an effective treatment for overweight or obese adults who do not have diabetes or PCOS.
What this study found: There is not sufficient evidence to support the use of metformin to treat overweight or obese adults without diabetes or polycystic ovary syndrome.
Implications
• The authors recommend against using metformin as a treatment for overweight or obesity in non-diabetic patients or patients without PCOS.
