Dr. Keeley and colleagues present an intriguing and novel idea that paternal attitude toward a pregancy may influence the risk of low birth weight. It would be most interesting to know how well women's reports of the father's happiness about the pregnancy correlate with men's self report. It would also be useful to know how the association holds up in populations of race/ethnicity other than Latina and in higher income groups. And ultimately, it will be helpful to know if interventions to influence paternal attitude, or to help women cope with perceived negative paternal attitude, lead to a change in birth outcomes.
