Re: A Roadmap for the NIH Roadmap

Schwenk and Green's article shares the hard-earned insights into the new world of building a successful collaborative, multi-faceted research infrastructure that is essential to family medicine's future. The authors have written a roadmap to guide us all to more competent participation in the NIH Roadmap linking community practices to clinically relevant research based in community practices and linked to sophisticated electronic and human resources only available in academic health centers.

By explaining the new language of translational research and sharing the processes and actual timelines used at the University of Michigan, the authors have helped all of us understand the tenacious committment and collaborative strategies required for success. I recommend this article as essential reading for all interested in linking family medicine research, PBRNs, and academic health centers.
