This new report of a community based intervention to reduce rapid repeat births among teen mothers is an exciting and innovative approach to reproductive health. While the intent to treat analysis only showed a trend towards benefit the sample was relatively modest and analysis based on participation showed a benefit associated with the intervention. This is certainly strong enough evidence to support further work in this type of intervention. It would be interesting to see if primary care providers working with teenage moms and trained in motivational interviewing techniques will have similar benefits. A great model to investigate would be among pediatric providers (family medicine, pediatrics, nurse practitioners, etc) who work with the children and will be seeing these moms over the critical year following a birth. The benefit here would be avoiding the need for sending out additional care providers (even if para professional) which reduces the sustainability of the intervention. I hope that this sort of trial can be carried out. Congratulations to this research team and their community based interviewers. Competing interests: None declared |
