RADICAL is an acronym for Read, Ask, Discuss, Inquire, Collaborate, Act, and Learn. The word radical also indicates the need to engage diverse participants in thinking critically about important issues affecting primary care and then acting on those discussions.1

Of the 417,000 medical assistants active in the United States in 2006, 62% worked in physician offices.2 Similar roles exist in other countries. Duties vary but typically are limited to medical care support functions.
