I enjoyed reading the article by Sara Ackerman and colleagues about the patient perspective on eConsult. This is an important area of inquiry as these systems are rolled out more broadly. The positive findings echo our experiences here in Canada, more specifically with our patient interviews that we conducted previously related to our eConsult service (Champlain BASE). The patient's relationship with their primary care provider is a key component of an effective eConsult interaction. The communication, interpretation and any action that needs follow-up after eConsult is dependent on the primary care provider. Timely follow-up conversations with the patient following an eConsult is fundamental to ensuring quality care is delivered in shared decision making manner. I look forward to reading more about the implementation in the participating clinics as part of the CORE project.
