Dr Kannai's article is a significant and impressive insight into the distress experienced during the doctor-patient relationship when the healing becomes a wounding. Such an experience is sorrowful for all members, yet the profound nature of who suffers shows that the very strengths that gift doctors are also the source of a vulnerability, too. We are very fortunate that Dr Kannai discovered that her vulnerability was also a pathway that would lead to her transcending her difficulties and enhance her communication and intuition towards both her patients and students. The suffering that Dr Kannai shared with and amongst those around her, and now beyond her through the expression of her narrative, is an embodiment of her vision and perception that we are all ultimately bearers of suffering, and we need to care and attend to the selves and bodies of others as well as our own - a common oversight in medical practice.

As Ruth Kannai demonstrates, complaints and litigation don't just have a painful impact on the doctor concerned. As well as being a moving article, I think this is an important one that deserves to be distributed and read widely. As Ruth Kannai demonstrates, complaints and litigation don't just have a painful impact on the doctor concerned. There are intricate, interconnected and systemic effects on the patient, other patients, and the whole climate of medical care. I'm really impressed by how Dr Kannai shows these can be transcended by an individual doctor through intense emotional and moral effort.
