Abstract
Introduction The requirement of resident scholarship in all residency programs is mandated by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Fulfilling this obligation remains a challenge for residency programs and is often highlighted by the Residency Review Committee (RRC). Waheed and colleagues previously reported success with a 13-step structured roadmap. This study aims to evaluate the impact of implementing a structured roadmap to enhance resident scholarly activity within a specific family medicine residency program.
Methods A quasi-experimental study was conducted, involving a retrospective review of relevant variables in pre and post-intervention periods. Scholarly output of residents graduating between 2016-2018 (pre-intervention) was compared to those graduating from 2019 -2021 (post-intervention). The study was determined to be exempt from full review by our institutional review board.
Results Between July 2016 and 2021, thirty-one Family-Medicine residents graduated from the program. A significant increase in the average number of scholarly activities including all manuscripts and presentations was noted after implementation of the 13 step road map. Notably, the average number of All-Scholarly activities increased four-fold in the post-intervention phase. This change was statistically significant on Mann-Whitney test p<0.001. Similarly, the number of All-presentations and All-Manuscripts were also statistically significant post intervention (p <0.001 and 0.0038 respectively).
Conclusion Implementing a comprehensive curriculum resulted in a notable increase in residents' scholarly output, contributing to the establishment of a culture of scholarship within the residency program. This comprehensive and well-defined roadmap holds significant potential for widespread adoption among programs aiming to fulfill ACGME's standards for scholarly activity.
