Family medicine departments continue to grow and develop. According to an Association of American Medical Colleges database (available online at http://www.aamc.org/data/msps/start.htm), family medicine departments now average more than 35 faculty, and 24 departments have 50 or more faculty. While federally funded research was uncommon a decade ago, 19 departments now report more than $1 million in externally funded research. Departments are financially stronger, too. Only one third had reserve funds in 1996, but roughly one half do now, and the average amount of reserve funds has doubled. Bigger, stronger, and more research oriented – these are not the departments of 10 years ago.
Bigger departments are also more challenging to operate and lead. Training programs have developed at a number of institutions and organizations, which help provide the skills needed to lead these complex organizations. Ensuring a steady stream of prepared chair candidates is essential to the continued growth and development of the discipline. Family physicians interested in the challenges and joys of leading an academic department are encouraged to talk with a local chair about the availability and suitability of the various training opportunities.
We recognize below the Chairs of new large regional medical center and osteopathic departments who have recently joined ADFM, as well as new Chairs and Interim Chairs of departments who are not new to the ADFM but who have moved into new positions.
