My experience as a resident interested in research was similar to the one presented here. As a second year resident I wanted to present research at conferences and publish a case report. However, I did not get any guidance, help or encouragement from faculty, in fact I was discouraged. I was told I should have gone into Internal Medicine at a University-based program instead of a community based Family Medicine program. A faculty member also stated a major medical journal would not accept a manuscript from a community-based program. This did not decrease my interest in research. I saw such potential with our 12 years of electronic medical records that could do retrospective and prospective studies. However, when I mentioned such things as publishing and presenting at conferences, the faculty ran away from me. Now after looking back, the real issue was the faculty lacked knowledge and skill on how to properly use PUBMED, critically analyze the medical literature, and apply it to patient care. Faculty used Up to Date, Dynamed and other sources for quick information. Without these basic skills, there can be no research or scholarly activity. I hope change comes from faculty and they learn how to use the medical literature, write manuscripts for publication, conduct clinical research and mentor residents on how to do research, because it is greatly needed.
