The role of the intern is increasingly that of the 4th year resident in times past. Residents need some amount of autonomy to feel empowered to include students in the real business of patient care. If residents have no independent power for decision making, how can the students have even a semblance of it? We need to remember that even though residents are novices, they are degreed physicians. THe more we disempower them, the weaker the students learning experiences become.

Students need to be visible to residents and available for patient care activities. Medical schoold educators need to balalnce the needs for didactics and other activities that pull the students out of the team with the need for visiblility amd availability. Students should be required to document their part in the care of patients in the real record, and it should stand as part of the record. Documentation as an exercise quickly becomes busywork.

Students need to be an active part of the medical team to be well prepared for residnecy. THere is no substitute for hands on activiity. Increased exposure to simulation labs may be part of the answer.
