The STFM New Faculty Scholars Scholarship Webinar Series was created as part of the STFM Foundation New Faculty Scholars Program, (https://stfm.org/awardsscholarships/scholarships/newfacultyscholarsprogram/overview/) which develops leadership and scholarship skills in a cohort of early career faculty.
Nancy Pandhi, MD, MPH, PhD, as part of the scholarly coaching arm of the New Faculty Scholars, and Suzanne Minor, MD, FAAFP, STFM Foundation Trustee, developed and coordinated the webinar series to be relevant and inclusive across academic or community family practice settings and applicable regardless of prior experience with scholarship.
“It was an honor putting this series together. I was glad to see in our evaluations that the scholars found the content applicable and motivating,” said Dr Pandhi. “I am delighted that this series will be more widely available as I think the content will be applicable to anyone interested in learning and teaching about the potential and practical aspects of scholarship in an academic family medicine career.”
Faculty leaders across the country generously provided the content on the potential for and practical aspects of scholarship in an academic family medicine career. The webinar series, originally presented directly to the 2020-2021 New Faculty Scholars, is now available for free at https://www.stfm.org/nfswebinars. The webinar content includes:
Aligning Scholarship With Our Work
John Frey III, MD, offers guidance for early and midcareer faculty on how to align their scholarly work with their academic career and unique interests and skills.
Turning Your Presentation Into a Publication
Suzanne Minor, MD, FAAFP, talks about how to turn a presentation into a publication through understanding the types of scholarship, noting the required elements of submission, and organizing submission for the correct journal.
Publishing With Efficiency
Nancy Pandhi, MD, MPH, PhD, gives detailed advice on the academic writing process, including choosing a journal target, structuring your writing team and process, and finalizing the manuscript for submission and revisions.
Thinking About Publication: Advice from Family Medicine Journal Editors
PRiMER and Family Medicine journal editors Christopher P. Morley, PhD, MA, CAS, and John Saultz, MD, give advice on how to prepare for publication. They cover practical tips on how to think about the purpose of your manuscript, identify the appropriate journal, understand journal guidelines, respond to a reviewer, publication timelines, and more.
Combining Scholarship and Advocacy
Tanya Anim-Fowler, MD, FAAFP, describes how local and national advocacy work can be turned into scholarly work. Areas such as population medicine, social determinants of health, systemic racism, and more can all be developed into presentations or publications, in part through collaboration with professional associations.
Bringing Scholarship to Quality Improvement and Clinical Innovation Efforts
Sally Kraft, MD, MPH, delineates key differences between traditional research and quality improvement efforts while explaining how to produce scholarly work from your quality improvement. Excellent quality improvement empowers action while fixing and improving something in the real world.
“The webinar series was key to helping to transform the New Faculty Scholars Program into a longitudinal cohort experience. Through the webinars, participants from across the country learned about scholarship considerations and logistics. Even though this was an innovation that arose during the pandemic, we plan on continuing these well-received webinars,” said Dr Minor.
Both the NFS Webinar series, https://www.stfm.org/nfswebinars, and the STFM New Faculty Scholars Program, https://www.stfm.org/newfacultyscholars, are supported by the STFM Foundation.
